Mitch and Roz at Lark in the Morning Camp, August 2008

We spend the first week of August every summer at Lark in the Morning music camp in the redwoods east of Mendocino. Here are some photos and sound clips from this year's camp.

Quebecois (French-Canadian) singing workshop in the mornings with Louis Leger

Here's a sound clip of Louis' fiddling and singing.

French traditional music session every afternoon for two hours

Here's a sound clip of one of the French trad sessions.

Meals outside the dining hall

Hammered dulcimer class with Robin Petrie

Here's a sound clip of Robin's hammered dulcimer playing.

Hurdy-gurdy class with Penny Cloud and Deb Dawson

Galician bagpipe workshop with Alexandre Cardoso by the creek

Quebecois tunes session

Swing dance in the dining hall Thursday night

There is a dance in the Camp 2 dining hall every night. I didn't manage to photograph most of them, especially the two French dances, where I was pretty busy. I also didn't get a shot of Roz dancing hula with her class the night of the Hawaiian dance. Lazy photographer! Roz, incidentally, spent a few hours every day in workshops in "Aloha Land", studying hula and slack-key guitar.

Another French trad session, with Mitch "coming out" as one of the bagpipers

The National Orchestra of Larkistan

That's the best name I could come up with this silly crazy ensemble playing Galician tunes and consisting of Galician pipes, jazz horns, marimbas, Californio button accordions, and heaven knows what else. Larkistan is a magical country, which like Brigadoon, only exists for a week every year, then fades away into the redwoods.
